Nikka Pure Malt Red

Country: Japan
Distillery: Nikka (Yoichi&Miyagikyo)
Type: Blended Malt
Age: NAS
Cask: Oak
ABV: 43.0%
Proof: 86
Price: $50

Nose: Candies, toffee, caramel. With time it opens more and marzipan, cherries, raspberries and grape paste aromas appear.
Palate: Sugary on the palate. Dominancy of caramel, apples, vanilla is strongly felt.
Finish: Spicy, short. Not what I expected.

Before Nikka Pure Malt Red, let's revisit Nikka Pure Malt Black.

In that article, I discussed that Nikka Pure Malt Red is the fruity member of the trio. It is dominated with grape aromas with some cherries and raspberries. Palate has some apples and pears, but somehow I couldn't find the harmony I found in the Black and the White.

Red stands out with fruity character but it certainly lacks balance especially with the short and spicy finish.

Maybe as a collector's item, to get this bottle for completing the trio can be a good idea. Other than that, a big pass!
