After tasting the new Bhakta 1928, I was looking forward to this release. Bhakta 1928 making the Best Whiskies of 2023 list was already a good sign.

Bhakta 2013 Straight Rye Whiskey showed up at my door just as I was leaving to visit Bhakta Spirits for their Winter Carnival which was an amazing time and I will get back to it in another post. In Vermont at the Griswold Campus, I had the chance to taste the whiskey, however, it was a taste after many other great spirits from Bhakta. That's why I waited to get back home and taste this rye whiskey.

After building the now iconic brand, Whistle Pig Whiskey, Raj Peter Bhakta has returned to the spirit that won him acclaim. He brought the 95% rye whiskey which is bold & spicy to meet with the sweet and fruity Calvados... I mean it's cask, the Calvados cask, and, quite honestly, very old Calvados casks.

Bhakta 2013 Rye Whiskey Tasting Notes

On the nose, Bhakta 2013 Rye Whiskey unfurls with the rich sweetness of dark honey and caramel frost, blending with the comforting essence of apple crumble. As it opens up, soft vanilla gently permeates the air, adding a layer of aromatic warmth.

The palate greets you with a creamy texture that feels luxurious, where baking and oak spices blend alongside the unexpected richness of white chocolate, punctuated by a distinctive peppery sensation at the back. This initial smoothness intriguingly gives way to a resurgence of spiciness, enveloping the front of the tongue uniquely.

The finish is both lingering and warmly satisfying, characterized by the mature nuances of oak spices and the dry, sophisticated notes of tobacco, all culminating in a finale of dark chocolate that leaves a memorable impression.

Verdict

You have to give this whiskey a few minutes on its own to start its day. Bhakta 2013 Straight Rye Whiskey responds to a couple of minutes perfectly. Especially on the nose and the finish, the flavors develop and create a depth that brings more to the table. Moreover, you never feel a single moment of burn with the hefty 107.6 proof. The whiskey dissolves in your mouth meeting all expectations. With the price tag of $149, I was a little bit hesitant initially, however, after I tasted this 10-year-old rye, this vintage turned out to be outstanding.

Calvados is a distinctive type of brandy produced in the Normandy region of France. It is made from distilling apple cider (and sometimes pear cider) into eau de vie, which is then aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two years, although many varieties mature for much longer to develop deeper complexities. The result is a rich, aromatic spirit that captures the essence of apples, often with nuances of vanilla, oak, and spices due to the aging proces
