Best Whiskies of 2023

2023 was an intense year that I learned a lot. Every year, with the number of places I see and people I meet, I see my opinion on whisky slightly evolving. I believe that my tastebuds also evolved a bit and I was able to select 10 whiskies I really enjoyed this year and wanted to present them to you as ' Best Whiskies of 2023!'

HOW DID I CHOOSE THE TOP 10?

Selecting the Best Whiskies of 2023 was never easy. This year I have been to 8 different countries other than the US. And yes, in every country I tried to visit distilleries if they had it. Tried their whiskies, or special releases.

All of the whiskies in this list were tasted at least two to three occasions in different mediums to be as fair as possible. Don't forget that all of the ranking here is personal, taste can differ from person to person. Every whisky is tasted with a combination of Vesl Glass, a tulip glass and a Glencairn glass to get the most detail out of it.

It was really hard to decide on 10 but I have chosen all the memorable ones from all those incredible whiskies. Most of the whiskies in the list are purchased by me and some of them were sent to me for honest reviews by the brands.

So here are the Best Whiskies of 2023 for me!

Balcones Cataleja

List starts with Texas!!!

Balcones just released their new Texas Single Malt, Cataleja and I am stunned. The Single Malt made with 100% Golden Promise Malted Barley was first aged in refill casks, then in a variety of decommissioned Sherry Solera puncheons: Moscatel, Amontillado Dulce, Oloroso, & Palo Cortado. With this many barrels, I was curious to see the result and it was, happy to say, brilliant.

Balcones released Cataleja to celebrate their 15th year of distilling whisky in Texas. Bottled at an impressive 59% abv, don't miss this giant!

Nose: A very earthy start. Figs, candied orange, subtle smoke. Demerara sugar and raspberry jam

Palate: Very oily and viscous. Bacon wrapped dates, espresso, cinnamon frosting, tropical fruits cut with tajin.

Finish: Long with blackberry ice cream and tobacco.
